Toenail Fungus

Foot and Ankle Podiatrist in Houston for treat the Toenail Fungus Foot

What is it?

The fungus toenails, also called onychomycosis, is a common condition that disfigures and sometimes destroys the nail. There are different types of fungi (microscopic organisms related to mold and mildew) that cause this problem. These fungi grow in the dark, damp and stuffy environment inside shoes. As they grow, fungi feed on keratin, the protein that forms strong hard surface of the toenails.

Do i have it?

When you have nail fungus, nails become thick, brittle and discolored (can be brown, white or opaque). The shape of the nail may be distorted. The nail can be separated (loose), and there may be debris under the nail.

These infections can be treated with prescription drugs only. However, the drug may not be effective for this in Rivera Foot & Ankle offer Laser Therapy

What causes it?

Most who wear tight-fitting shoes or stockings are more likely to suffer from fungi, especially if they have poor hygiene in the feet. Another risk is to use layers of nail polish, which do not allow the nail to breathe. Furthermore, as these fungi can spread from foot to foot on the floors of showers and locker rooms, fungal infections in toenails are common among soldiers, athletes and miners.

How can i help prevent it?
  • Wear comfortable shoes and socks that allow your feet have "breathing room".
  • Wear shoes, sandals or flip-flops in communal showers and locker rooms.
  • Wash your feet every day, dry thoroughly and use a foot powder good quality.
  • Use of any type and clean cámbieselas average daily.
  • Keep nails short.
  • Disinfect pedicure tools before using them.
