Diagnosis and treatment for ankle sprains

Foot & ankle specialists

If your child's ankle hurts a lot after injuring it, you will need to call their pediatrician and they will most likely need to visit. He will explore your ankle, moving it in several different ways to check its stability and determine its grade. He may send you an X-ray to see if there are any broken bones.

Treatment of ankle sprains depends on its degree. Most sprains heal within 4 to 6 weeks if the patient protects his ankle well and follows the instructions given by the doctor. Most likely, the doctor will indicate that:

Rest the ankle
Apply ice (wrapped in a towel) to the ankle for 48 hours after the sprain to reduce swelling
Immobilize the ankle with an inflatable splint or elastic bandage
Elevate your ankle when sitting or lying down.
He may also direct you to take anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain and reduce swelling.
Likewise, the patient should avoid those activities that involve straining the ankle, should do stretching and strength exercises when pain and swelling improve and, depending on the severity of the sprain, may need to do rehabilitation to promote the healing process .

With sprains, the key is to take it easy and not force or feel pressured to resume sports or other physical activities too soon.
