Diagnosis
The specialist will be able to easily diagnose this condition by distinguishing with the naked eye the signs of redness, swelling and extreme sensitivity to the touch. When examining the foot you will see that the skin along the edge of the nail will appear to be growing above the nail or the nail below the skin. In advanced cases, infection and a small amount of pus may appear.

In general, no exams or x-rays are necessary.

Treatments
In the event that the person with an ingrown toenail has diabetes, nerve damage in the leg or foot, poor foot circulation or an infection around a nail, specialists recommend that they do not try to treat the problem at home and that they go as soon as possible to a doctor.

The main treatment that the podiatrist will carry out will be a hygienic cutting of the nails and in severe cases or of repetition of the ailment, it is advisable, according to Torralba Estellés, to perform a slight surgery of the nail removing definitively a small portion that will leave the sheet narrower, thus preventing it from nailing again.
