Can Pedicures be Dangerous?
Foot and Ankle Podiatry
For the most part pedicures are a relaxing way to pamper yourself and a fun way to get together and bond with gal pals. However, there have been some cases of skin and nail infections developing as a result of unhygienic foot spas and equipment.
Foot baths shouldn't be used on people with open sores, wounds or any other skin condition as it can provide a portal for bacteria to enter and cause infection. Even having recently shaved your legs can increase the risk of infection since there can be tiny cuts through which bacteria can enter.
If after having a pedicure you develop wounds, sores or ulcers, see your doctor without delay. The sores may initially look like insect bites but if they increase in size and severity then they may require antibiotic treatment to minimise scarring.
Diabetics are more prone to having skin infections, especially around the feet and lower legs, so extra care is required.
