Smelly feet in men is a common occurrence. However, it is not peculiar to men on as it occurs in women too. But men seems to have the worst hit.
One of the main reasons for your smelly feet is sweat. Summer time are period when there is increase in temperature. And this causes your body including your feet to sweat.
Sweat encourages the growth of bacteria. Men are more likely to inherit hyperhidrosis which is another term for excessive sweating. When you lock up your feet in shoes, you are encouraging the growth of these bacteria which are responsible for smelly feet.
The hair on the feet could also be responsible for your smelly feet as they encourage the growth of these bacteria by creating an extended area for the bacteria to thrive.
In most part of the world, men usually put on shoes that totally cover their feet even in summer. And these shoes are worn for many hours.
The following are tips to stop smelly feet in men.
1.- One important tip is to observe good foot hygiene. This is to help reduce the growth of bacteria. The tips below will help you achieve this:
- Wash your feet at least twice daily especially if your feet stink. Wash with antibacterial soap.
- Dry your feet thoroughly after wash especially between each and every toes.
- Treat your feet to a good foot soak. This will help to keep your feet healthy. You can soak feet in a mixture of water and vinegar.
2.- Reduce the amount of sweat on your feet:
- Use foot powder or baby powder on your feet to help absorb moisture and keep your feet dry.
- Spray antiperspirants on your feet to reduce sweat.
- If you have hyperhidrosis, please see your doctor to help tackle the condition.
- Wear more of shoes such as sandals that allow air to your feet especially during summer or if your sweat a lot. Also, take off your shoes at regular interval to allow air to the feet.
3.- Your socks:
- They should always be clean.
- If you experience smelly feet, then it should be wise to change your socks regularly.
- Do not wear the same pair of socks daily. You should have several pair of socks to change with.
- Wear socks that can help absorb sweat such as cotton, wool or other absorbent materials.
- Nylon socks are not the best for you if you sweat a lot as they help to trap moisture on the feet.
- For men that sweat a lot, they can carry along with them an extra pair of socks when going to stay long outdoor and change halfway through the day. You can use moisture wicking socks such as drymax socks to help keep feet dry all day.
4.- Your shoes:
- Don’t wear same pair of shoes daily.
- Air out your shoes after use to dry out properly.
- Shoes made of synthetic materials are not the best for you as they make your sweaty feet worse. Instead, go for shoes made from natural materials such as leather.
- Wear shoes that allow air to your feet such as sandals and flip-flops.
- For shoes that stinks, spray disinfectant on the shoes.
